18th Feb Into Cambodia

So to pick up where I left off.... I got to Bangkok only to be told that the group had already left! That there is a Saturday starting group and a Sunday one, and the Sat (which i was on, but obviously running a day late) had gone. I couldn't cope with this news as I was too exhausted having not eaten in days, so just decided to leave a note at reception and go to bed. About an hour later - midnight the tour leader, Marcus, came up and said they'd only been for an introductory meal and were all here - leaving at 6.30 am in the morning! So including breakfast at 6.00am I was in Thailand for about 8 hrs!

My group for this trip was lovely - all about my age (save two younger girls) and all travelling for various similar reasons. Aussies, Americans, Brits, Irish, Swiss and a Japanese girl (who spoke no English and found the whole thing very difficult and tiring).

It was mini bus up to the border and nice roads - then we hit the Cambodian border and it all changed! Allegedly Thai airways don't want the road improved so everyone has to fly to Cambodia! Need less to say it was an African type journey for all those who can sympathise (lots of dirt, dust and pot holes in an old bus, not conducive to any sleep!). Crossing the border was interesting too - and took some time in the mid day heat with various forms and people walking off with our luggage! But Marcus the leader made it smoother and quite an adventure.

We arrived in Siem Reep in the afternoon (10 hrs of travelling). Its remarkably westernised and the hotel was really nice (HBO film channel constantly!). Lots of restaurants and hotels have sprung up in the last couple of years to cater for the growing tourist industry.

We had just enough time for some Kymer food (like Thai but less spicy) and then I gave up and went back to the hotel (in my first Tuk Tuk ride) to collapse!
